Success Story - Increasing Energy Efficiency through Green Building Design and South Africa’s National Building Regulations photo

Municipal building surveyors play a central role in green infrastructure development. Critical to their success in driving sustainability is adherence to the South African National Standards (SANS) 10400-XA, which refers to the portion of the South African National Building Regulations that focuses on energy efficiency and sustainability in green building design. In coordination with the City of Tshwane, the City of Johannesburg, and the South African Local Government Association, the USAID South Africa Low Emission Development (SA-LED) program held a training for municipal building control officers on the regulations and tools at their disposal to enforce compliance with SANS 10400-XA. This success story highlights a participant of the trainings, Peter Goldner, a building surveyor for the City of Tshwane who has since applied learnings from the trainings in his work for the City ensuring new buildings and extensions comply with the regulations.
